Frequently Asked Questions

What is Assisted Living?

The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) defines assisted living as a special combination of housing and personalized health care designed to respond to the individual needs of those who need help with daily activities of daily living. Care is provided in a professionally managed group living environment in a way that promotes maximum independence and dignity.

How do I choose an Assisted Living residence?

Choosing an assisted living community can be a challenge. However, there are some general guidelines that you should follow as you begin looking for an assisted living community for your loved one. For example consider the following:

• Atmosphere: Is the decor attractive and homelike? Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you? Does the staff call residents by name and interact with them?

• Physical Features: Is the community well designed for the resident's needs? Is the floor plan easy to follow? Are doorways, hallways, and rooms accommodating to wheelchairs and walkers?

• Medication & Health Care: Does the community have specific policies regarding storage of medications? Assistance with medications? Training and supervision of staff and record keeping? Is self-administration of medication allowed?

Every aspect of our residences, from the physical building to the care and services provided, is designed to make our residents and future residents feel at home-their home. Avonlea provides ultimate flexibility in personal preference for food, activities, and personal needs. The family style of living provides stimulation for the best possible quality of life.

Do I sign a lease?

No. We rent month to month. Residents must provide 30 days’ notice before leaving. An admission fee, which varies by location, will, among other things, reserve an apartment.

Is the Admission fee refundable?

No, not generally. This fee allows the facility to assemble and create the administrative information and procedures to insure full compliance with health care regulations, your doctor’s requirements, and of course your preferences as an individual wellness plan is prepared. Reservation deposits may be the exception. Other exceptions may also apply.

What if I am ill or need help?

Our residences feature an emergency response system and someone is available 24-hours a day.

What happens if I need additional care while living at the residence?

We conduct regular assessments to determine if your individually prepared wellness plan should be modified and consult with you and your family members to adjust for changes.

I'm on a special diet, how is that handled?

Each residence employs a certified Dietitian and meals are planned to be nutritious and to support individual special diets.
